About

Hi! My name is Alyssa. I am a mother of two, and I am passionate about education! With a professional qualification in the teaching of the English language, a postgraduate degree in the Sciences, a background in Waldorf Education and more than 18 years of teaching experience, I have developed a holistic approach to education - with a special focus on guiding children to learn how to read through phonics.

What is phonics?

Phonics is about the understanding of the sounds of letters in the alphabet. By understanding this, we blend sounds in order to read words. Comprehending phonics is the basis to a strong foundation to spelling and independent reading.

What to expect during a pixie phonics class?

Pixie Phonics classes are specially designed for children to be engaging, fun and imaginative, exposing your pixie to the first sounds of words. During a playgroup session, we explore topics ranging from animals, food, shapes, modes of transport, geography, sports, the body and many more through song and dance, art, conversation and tactile activities. This provides opportunities to all types of learners, whether visual, audio or kinaesthetic, to hone their English language skills. While each 40-minute class has a different theme and set of activities, the order in which the session progresses remains the same so as to provide a sense of structure for the child. This pedagogy works like a charm with children, and it gives them a sense of security and confidence, knowing what to expect next.

Pixie Phonics classes are intentionally held in a homely and nature-filled environment - I strongly believe that effortless learning is best achieved in non-constraining surroundings. Class-sizes for playgroup sessions are kept small so as to provide personalised attention - no more than 6 pixies in a class!

I also offer 1-1 phonics sessions which expose your child to the Jolly Phonics method of learning how to read through phonics.

A Pixie Phonics session exposes your child to something different for a small part of their day! Not only will your child benefit and grasp the proper sounds of letters, but so will you. Reiterate the sounds learned at your own home and give your child a head-start to phonics and accomplishment in the English language!
